Essential Oils For Your Voice

Do you use essential oils? Do you know what they are?? (Hint hint: they’re plant extracts 😉🌱).

I’ve been using them for about three years now. A friend reached out to me when I posted about the big psoriasis flare I was having (it was this post) and said “Hey lady, do you want to talk about essential oils? I think they could really help you!”And my first reaction was like: “Um, I’m majorly sick right now. Why are you suggesting aromatherapy?!?”

Boy have I learned a lot since back then. But if you’re anything like I was three years ago, you might not realize that essential oils are SO much more than just yummy smelling bottles of goodness… they are truly plant medicine and nature’s solution for so many of our maladies. My collection of oils is now the most important part of my medicine cabinet, and I’ve eliminated my need for Advil or Nyquil.

So of course you can use them when it comes to your voice! But there are a couple of really important things you need to know about why you shouldn’t heat the essential oils and how to be sure you don’t overdo it with them. I’ve been a mega fan of these oils for three years (they’re all I use, and truly the best, highest-quality on the market), but I never imagined I’d want to do the multi level marketing thing. Then I had the incredible opportunity to join this group of inspiring women in supporting each other so we can educate people to reach for peppermint oil not Tylenol during a headache (etc). I said YES because I believe in this 1000%. This is a new endeavor for me, but please know that I am never going to get pushy about selling you oils and this won’t take over my newsletter at all. It’s simply part of showing up more fully in service in all the ways I believe.

So, Hippie Witch Club is gonna be an integrated conversation about how we take radical, amazing care of ourselves so we can show up fully and authentically in the world. I’ll share more info with you about essential oils too, but there is absolutely zero pressure to buy anything.

My Recs For Lozenges

Friendly service announcement from your local vocal health educator during this cold season in the northern hemisphere: Be careful with those menthol and eucalyptus lozenges! And especially the ones with benzocaine!

Even though it may feel better to be numbing your throat in the short term, in the long term you could do damage. In today’s vocal health video, I’ll share the cough drops I choose over the ones with numbing medication, and I’ll encourage you to follow suit…

Use A Humidifier!

Should you use a humidifier for your voice? Simple answer: Yes! In today’s vocal health video, learn why having a humidifier on, especially while you’re sleeping, is extremely beneficial for keeping your voice in tip top shape.

Room Temp Water Is Better Than Ice Water

I don’t always have a completely resolute opinion about the best remedy for your voice, because what works for one person may not work as well for another. But when it comes to the question of what temperature your water should be, I do have a strong opinion: Don’t drink ice water!

If you didn’t know why, check out today’s vocal health video where I share why ice water is truly not ideal for your voice (or really any of the internal tissues of your body), and why I strongly recommend drinking room temperature water for your health and your voice.

And now that you’re armed with this knowledge, you can be obnoxious like me at restaurants and ask for water with no ice. (I mean, who wants ice water when the weather is getting cold anyway, amirite?!? ⛄️)

What To Put In Your Hot Water

Cold season is officially upon us here in the Northern hemisphere, and I want you to stay healthy! One of the best ways to do that is to drink lots of warm liquids, but people say so many different things about what kind of hot beverage to drink to soothe your voice… Use honey! Use lemon! Use ashwaganda! (That last one is an awesome ayurvedic remedy, fyi 😜). But look, the best thing for your voice is not actually that complicated: it’s plain ole’ hot water.

Gargle Instead of Clearing Your Throat

Are you guilty of clearing your throat? Even if it’s not a frequent habit and you only do it when you’re sick, it’s just not the best. Why? Well clearing your throat is actually pretty darn violent for your vocal cords – you’re essentially smashing them together trying to get the gunk off – when the truth is that the gunk is going to just settle back down anyway.

What’s a better thing to do? Gargle with warm salt water! It not only relieves the irritation in your throat, but it can literally dissolve the mucus. In today’s vocal health video, learn the specifics for the best way to gargle with salt and warm water to clear your throat! (I got a cold two weeks ago and I’ve been doing this non-stop since then!)

Since it’s fall and it feels like nearly half of the people around me have gotten sick recently, I hope this is timely for you… though actually if I’m hoping, I hope even more that you’re getting your rest and eating well and staying healthy!



Animal Movements (Body)

Guess what happened…

On Monday I was having a session with a private client, and I said “I know what would be great for your warm up. Try the animals exercise!!” So I hopped over to the How To Warm Up youtube playlist to grab the link, and it wasn’t there. Hmm.

After the session I started digging, and I realized O.M.G… Suzie and I got our wires crossed on dates and we never released the video!! I pinky swear we had no intention of doing this, but it’s certainly a hilarious accident: we’ve got a How To Warm Up encore for you!! 🎉 And it happens to be potentially the most ridiculous warm up of all, so it just couldn’t be more perfect.

Here’s the deal with this one: I imagine you’ve noticed that animals move in tons of different ways and aren’t shy about stretching their bodies however they want to. So then if we want to get a really good stretch as part of our vocal and physical warm up, it makes sense that we could just act like an animal! In this extra super special bonus How To Warm Up video, we’ll be channeling the mighty lion, the tiny mouse, the moo-ing cow, and the meow-ing cat to warm up our body.

Wow wow wow. This is the last How To Warm Up video of the series. We have to wind it down because I’ve taught you everything I know! (Joking/not joking 😜)

Alternate Nostril Breathing (Breath)

Have you ever heard the word “pranayama” from yoga? It’s made up of two parts: prana, which means life force or breath, and yama, which means control. So a pranayama technique is essentially a way of managing the breath.

Today’s exercise is a bit of a departure from other exercises in the How To Warm Up video series because it doesn’t directly pertain to your voice. But I share it because I find that it’s my absolute go-to way to calm down when I’m feeling anxious or uncentered. No joke – I have used this technique to relax while feeling panicked on the NYC subway, and one time I even did it for 45 minutes straight while I was feeling nauseous on a ferry ride!! 🚉⛴ As you can tell, I swear by it. And having now shared this ancient yogic breathing practice with lots and lots of people who agree how amazing it is, I figured it was important to share!

So, in this breathing video, you’ll learn a simple sequence to breathe in and out of alternating nostrils in order to balance the nervous system and the two hemispheres of the brain. I highly recommend you try it.
